Tokyo Olympics: Dominant Samuel Takyi picks quarterfinals slot with Caicedo win

Ghanaian boxer Samuel Takyi has booked his place at the quarterfinals of the featherweight division at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 20-year-old put up a dominant display to win via a unanimous decision over Ecuador’s Jean Carlos Caicedo in the early hours of Wednesday.

Takyi had a slow start to the bout but rallied to outclass Caicedo by getting a unanimous scoring from the five judges to win the first round.

Carlos Caicedo regrouped and won the second round 4-1 to put the fight in a balance ahead of the final round.

Samuel Takyi rallied in the third round with some heavy punches to win the bout and book a last 8 spot, one win away from the medal zone.

He will come up against Colombian Ceiber David Avila Segura who defeated Zambia’s Everisto Mulenga via a 3-2 split decision.
