2021 Afcon: Senegal expecting Ismaila Sarr in Cameroon after ‘positive injury development’

The Senegal Football Association says it is expecting Ismaila Sarr to feature at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon after a ‘positive injury development’ on Wednesday.

The midfielder picked a knee injury in a Premier League game against Manchester United in November and was reluctantly released by Watford after being named in the Teranga Lions’ final squad.

Sarr was released by the Hornets after Senegal threatened Fifa action.

“Sarr is currently in Barcelona for previously planned medical check-ups to examine his injury. These reviews have resulted in a positive development,” the Senegal Football Federation said in a statement.

“After discussions with his surgeon, the medical staff of Watford and the Senegal Football Federation as well as the player, it was agreed that Sarr follow a rehabilitation program with a view to returning to the pitch.

“This program will last two weeks after which he will join the squad in Cameroon. Close daily monitoring will be done to assess the player’s progress.”

Senegal, already hit by positive COVID-19 cases, needed a 97th minute penalty to beat Zimbabwe in their Afcon opener on Monday.

Aliou Cisse’s men will take on Guinea on Friday in their second Group B game.
